Exodus

by Hollis Chatelain

Her work is SEW amazing!!!  This, of course, is no exception!  How muted her palette yet how effective her delivery.

I had the good fortune to take a class with Hollis at the Houston Quilt Festival in 2008.  The class discussed quilting as the third design element of a quilt. She brought her quilts and talked about them with the class.  In this particular quilt, Exodus, she said she ripped out her stitching of the baby, five times I think she said, until she got it ‘right.’

She encouraged us to ‘try.’  She would never quilt the way she does if she hadn’t TRIED.  AND, been willing to learn…rip…learn…practice.  This kind of thread play doesn’t just happen overnight.  It is a learned skill.  She was powerful and truly inspirational.

Enjoy!

Piecefully, Pam
